ABSTRACT We describe ISAAC/ESO-VLT observations of the Hα λ6563 Balmer line of 33 field galaxies from the Canada-France Redshift Survey (CFRS) with redshifts selected between 0.5 and 1.1. We detect Hα in emission in 30 galaxies and compare the properties of this sample with the low-redshift sample of CFRS galaxies at z ∼ 0.2 (Tresse & Maddox 1998). We find that the Hα luminosity, L(Hα), is tightly correlated to M(BAB) in the same way for both the lowand high-redshift samples. L(Hα) is also correlated to L([O II]λ3727), and again the relation appears to be similar at low and high redshifts. The ratio L([O II])/L(Hα) decreases for brighter galaxies by as much as a factor 2 on average. Derived from the Hα luminosity function, the comoving Hα luminosity density increases by a factor 12 from 〈z〉 = 0.2 to 〈z〉 = 1.3. Our results confirm a strong rise of the star formation rate (SFR) at z < 1.3, proportional to (1 + z) (with H0 = 50 km s −1 Mpc, q0 = 0.5). We find an average SFR(2800Å)/SFR(Hα) ratio of 3.2 using the Kennicutt (1998) SFR transformations. This corresponds to the dust correction that is required to make the near UV data consistent with the reddening-corrected Hα data within the self-contained, I-selected CFRS sample.

Star Formation Density and H α Luminosity Function of an Emission Line Selected Galaxy Sample at z ∼ 0 . 24 ⋆
We use narrowband imaging (FWHM = 70 Å) to select a sample of emission line galaxies between 0.20 . z . 1.22 in two fields covering 0.5 sq. deg. We use spectroscopic follow-up to select a sub-sample of Hα emitting galaxies at z ∼ 0.24 and determine the Hα luminosity function and star formation density at z ∼ 0.24 for both of our fields. Corrections are made for imaging and spectroscopic incompl...

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey is a long-term project aiming at finding and analysing star-forming galaxies detected by their Hα emission in Schmidt objective-prism plates. The instrumental set-up limits the volume of the Universe surveyed to a redshift z ∼< 0.045. So far we have discovered several hundred emission-line galaxies (ELGs) undergoing star formation at a wide ran...
متن کاملPreprint typeset using L ATEX style emulateapj v. 03/07/07 THE [O II] λ3727 LUMINOSITY FUNCTION AT Z ∼ 1
We measure the evolution of the [O II] λ3727 luminosity function at 0.75 < z < 1.45 using highresolution spectroscopy of ∼ 14, 000 galaxies observed by the DEEP2 galaxy redshift survey. We find that brighter than L[OII] = 10 42 erg s the luminosity function is well-represented by a power law dN/dL ∝ L with slope α ∼ −3. The number density of [O II]-emitting galaxies above this luminosity declin...
متن کاملThe Abundance of Low-luminosity Lyman Α Emitters at High Redshift
We derive the luminosity function of high-redshift Lyman α emitting sources from a deep, blind, spectroscopic survey that utilized strong-lensing magnification by intermediate-redshift clusters of galaxies. We observed carefully selected regions near 9 clusters, consistent with magnification factors generally greater than 10 for the redshift range 4.5< z <6.7. Eleven emission-line candidates we...
متن کاملThe Star Formation Rate of the Universe at z ≈ 6 from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field
We determine the abundance of i-band drop-outs in the recently-released HST/ACS Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF). Since the majority of these sources are likely to be z ≈ 6 galaxies whose flux decrement between the F775W i-band and F850LP zband arises from Lyman-alpha absorption, the number of detected candidates provides a valuable upper limit to the unextincted star formation rate at this redshi...
